Through NAPA store, code reads:
56-20981 00(C) Code 99
This is for a Base coat / Clear coat system.
This paint was also used on 1958 to 1977 Austin’s.

The answer is Damask Red.
It is a direct color match for my 1926 Chief. It was also used on vehicles made by the Leland Car company.
Also, Bob Stark told me that was the color.

I’m just back from my nearest NAPA auto parts store who is also a DuPont dealer. According to him…143A is a correct number for a kind of maroon-red. I saw a small sample on his computer and this color is very close to the old paint I have on an original fender (1923 chief)….Interesting….We tried the other numbers previously mentionned in my…[Read more]

Hello, I just saw in an other forum that the DuPont centari 143AH would be a good number for this old indian red. I made some research about this number on GOOGLE and found also Dulux 93-143H. This is probably not the correct and exact match…but as 20scout said, check this red and if you like it, use it… Let’s continue the research………Alain

You have hit on a question that has been asked my thousands and no one has really come up with an answer. Your best bet is to find someone with a nice original bike or a nice restored bike with the color you like and go for it. Indian red has been discussed and argued for years so don’t expect any fast answers. Goodluck!

I am in the process of restoring a 1916 Indian and need the paint code for the right shade of red used back then. I have noticed many different reds used on bikes at shows from a bright lipstick red to almost maroon. I really want to get it right the first time, do-overs are no fun

I am needing a pair of rear leaf springs for my 1916 Indian with the Cradle Spring Suspension. Also need the “U” shaped part that goes over the rear fender and connects the two suspension links together. Need a rear fender but may be dreaming on this, I do have one but it looks like it went through the First World War. Thanks for any help or leads.

There was some kind of a proplem with to small a relay and I think a wire that was causing a lot of starter problems. There’s a guy on e-bay selling a heavy duty relay and tips on other repairs for the starter. Instead of taking the starter to H-D shop go to an auto electrical rebuild shop ( starter & altornators) that starter is a Nipendiso and…[Read more]

I have an ’02 spirit also. I get nothing when I push the start switch.
I’m pretty sure it’s in the wiring. I had a new starter put in at 1500
miles. The original was too weak. If you’re sure it’s the starter take it
to a Harley dealer. They can work on S&S. Let me know what you find
out. Maybe we have the same problem. -

here is my take on this. This motorcycle is a collectors item. So it can depend on many things. one being how much are you willing to pay for something. What do you intend to do with it. keep it for show, ride it, sell it as an investment. etc. etc.
the other thing is how much they expect to make selling it. If it’s an auction you could be…[Read more] -

This bike is up for auction 1,000 miles away (in another country), so it’s kinda hard to get too many details. Someone has bid around $3,000, which still doesn’t meet the seller’s reserve price. I would only be interested in this thing if I knew I was getting a VERY good deal. From reading the comments on this post… I’m guessing it doesn…[Read more]

Hi Rod,
Can you tell me if it is a 37 ci or 45 ci enging? How many parts are not correct for this bike or does this matter to you? How solid is the gas tank (rusty inside or clean)…….ect? Have you seen it run? If so, how sound is the engine? And how is the tranny? You have too many unanswered questions Rod and you need to do some r…[Read more]

Thanks for the good advice Atetu. Can anyone throw me a dollar figure on what this bike is probably worth (assuming it is a 1928 model)? $1,000? $3,000? $5,000? $10,000? I’d like to get a good deal on this thing, but don’t really know what a “good deal” is. Help.

Hello, this is a scout model but is it really a 1928? Check carefully the serial number. I think you will have to straighten the fork, it is bent rearward and the fender is near to hit the frame. Check with peoples who restored these scouts. They will inform you about the missing parts and incorrect ones. The asking price should reflect the real…[Read more]
